When it comes to food, the French definitely know what they’re doing. From appetizers to desserts, and everything in between, French cuisine believes in making every bite something to remember. Here are three sandwiches you must try next time you’re in France, because there is more to savor than a croissant.

Croque Monsieur

Translated from French as “mister bite”, the Croque Monsieur is the equivalent of a French grilled cheese but way, way better. Traditionally made with ham and Gruyère, the idea is for the cheese to be placed on the outside of the sandwich as well so that it forms a crust. There is also a variation of the dish called a Croque Madame which involves a fried or poached egg on top.

Pan Bagnat

Pronounced “pa ba-na”, this sandwich has its origins in the French coastal city of Nice. A wholewheat version of sourdough, known as pain de campagne, is used as the base of the sandwich, with the fresh toppings resembling those of a classic salade niçoise.

Jambon Beurre

Sandwiches don’t have to be fancy to be delicious. One of the greatest French sandwiches involves the simplest of ingredients—a classic baguette, butter, and ham. More than three million are sold daily.
