Many a traveler will tell you that it is about the journey, not the destination. When visiting South Africa, Cape Town most definitely needs to be on your list. But instead of hopping on a plane, it is worth making your way there via the magical Garden Route.

Depending on where you begin, the trek is a 190-mile journey that will take you through various coastal towns and allow you to view South Africa’s gorgeous natural landscape.

Here are some places not to miss.

Kaaimans River Gorge, Wilderness

The Kaaimans River lies between the towns of Knysna and George, and visitors can explore the gorge on foot, by water, and rope. Hike through the forest before abseiling down to reach the water where you will get to swim and climb over boulders. It is also possible to kayak through the river to a secret waterfall.

Swim with the Seals, Plettenberg Bay

Seals are playful and inquisitive creatures, and the Robberg Peninsula along Plettenberg Bay is home to around 8,000 Cape fur seals! You can get up close and personal with the little guys by taking a guided snorkelling tour.

Bloukrans Bridge, Tsitsikamma

If you’re not afraid of heights, you have to visit the Bloukrans Bridge which is the highest natural commercial bungee jumping site in the world. At a height of 709 feet, it has set the scene for several world records.
