Fall might just be the perfect season for hiking—comfortable temperatures, stunning foliage, and fewer crowds on the trails. However, this magical time of year also requires some special preparation. Let’s dive into three tips that will set you up for success on your fall hiking trips.

Layer Up Wisely

Fall weather can be unpredictable. Temperatures often fluctuate throughout the day. The key to staying comfortable is layering. We recommend starting with a moisture-wicking base layer to keep sweat away from your skin. Add an insulating middle layer, such as a fleece or wool sweater, for warmth. Top it off with a waterproof and windproof outer layer to protect against unexpected showers or gusts. 

Plan for Shorter Days

As you prepare for your hike, keep in mind that fall days are significantly shorter than summer days. Start earlier to make sure you have plenty of time to complete your trek before sunset. And bringing a flashlight just in case can be a smart move to avoid getting stuck in the dark.

Fall is prime hunting season in many areas, which means hikers need to take extra precautions. Research local hunting regulations and seasons before your trip. If hiking in an area where hunting is permitted, wear bright, visible colors – orange is typically recommended.
