Belo Horizonte is one of Brazil’s most underrated cities, but fans of modern architecture can’t get enough of it. If you’re in the mood to explore some unique contemporary buildings during your visit to this city, here are three worth putting on your travel itinerary.
Church of Saint Francis of Assisi
Oscar Niemeyer designed many iconic buildings all across Brazil, but this is certainly his best work in Belo Horizonte. He wanted to experiment with reinforced concrete while designing this building, and its distinctive curved design and blue ceramic tiles quickly transformed it into one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks.
Casa do Baile
Just like the Church of Saint Francis of Assisi, this architectural marvel is also a part of the Pampulha Modern Ensemble. They’ve both been designed by Oscar Niemeyer, and this building became a major landmark thanks to its curved form that perfectly fits into its natural surroundings.
Cidade Administrativa
Oscar Niemeyer was also in charge of designing the headquarters of the state of Minas Gerais, and he was up to the task. The complex that houses Cidade Administrativa features several sleek, minimalist buildings on its premises, including the futuristic main building with a dark glass facade.
