Costa Rica is home to some of the world’s most beautiful jungles. It’s also home to some less talked about quirky attractions. Here are 5 that we love.

San Lucas Island Prison Graffiti

The prison was once home to some of the most vicious criminals in the country. Now, all that’s left is the abandoned walls and the scribbles on them. The criminals drew pictures to express their frustration and depression using any materials they could find, including their own blood.

Río Celeste

The neon blue rivers are spectacular. The surrounding areas are a perfect natural getaway and the waters are so beautifully colored that people often assume pictures are photoshopped.

Sloth Sanctuary

Aviarios del Caribe is a rehabilitation center for sloths. You can take an educational tour of the sanctuary, where you will learn of the plight of these creatures in the jungle and get to meet many adorable sloths.

Monteverde Bat Jungle

Here, you can observe eight different species of live bats and learn how important they are to the eco-system. As it turns out, bats are useful for a lot more than Halloween decorations.

Museo Criminológico

If you are interested in criminology and the psychology of criminals, this is the museum for you. The museum is definitely not for the faint-hearted as some of the displays are quite graphic and troubling.
