A “Museum of Underwater Art” is Coming To Queensland, Australia

The Museum of Underwater Art is coming to Australia’s Great Barrier Reef marine park.

Created by the sculptor and environmentalist Jason deCaires Taylor, the museum is certainly unique. It will feature installations and sculptures submerged in the water. Taylor is using art to raise awareness of the threat the ecosystem faces.

“The Australian Institute of Marine Science has a series of temperature loggers around the reef. It will compile this data and feed it into the sculpture, so that changes in temperature will be seen in real time,” the artist said.

He also explained: “Our oceans are going through rapid change, and there are huge threats, from rising sea temperatures to acidification, and a large amount of pollution entering the system.

“Part of creating an underwater museum is about changing our value systems – thinking about the sea floor as something sacred, something that we should be protecting and not taking for granted.”

One exhibit includes a solar-powered sculpture of a young girl who changes color based on the live water-temperature data. Others will be partially or fully submerged underwater.

The exhibits will be spread out across Queensland’s coat and will open in December 2019.
