Visiting museums isn’t something that most people think of when they are in Miami, Florida. After all, the city’s beaches are too good to pass on.

However, the chances are that you will get a bit tired of swimming and sunbathing at one point. If that happens and you want to spend some time indoors without spending money, make sure to give Miami’s free museums a visit.

Institute of Contemporary Art

Institute of Contemporary Art, or ICA Miami, will first amaze you with its building, designed by Charles Gwathmey, and then with its diverse collection. The museum focuses on contemporary art and is known for giving space to emerging talent while also housing works from prominent artists like Pablo Picasso, Yves Klein, and Roy Lichtenstein. Admission is free all year round, although it is advisable to reserve a time slot for guaranteed entry.

Lowe Art Museum

Part of the University of Miami campus, the Lowe Art Museum is considered the oldest art museum in South Florida. Its collection consists of 19,250 objects, including paintings, sculptures, and artifacts, that cover 5,000 years of human art history. The museum’s permanent exhibition features paintings from El Greco, Francisco Goya, and Claude Monet among others, glass works from Pablo Picasso, Asian ceramics, Ancient Greek and Roman sculptures, and more. Entry is free for the general public, although reservations are advisable.

Patricia and Phillip Frost Art Museum

Patricia and Phillip Frost Art Museum is best known for housing an impressive collection of works from Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as American artworks from the 20th century. Recently, the museum has also been working on expanding the number of art objects from Asia and Africa. Entry to the museum, including the permanent collection and traveling exhibitions, is always free.
