But after you finish exploring the former residence of Ottoman rulers, you shouldn’t be quick to leave the area.  Instead, take advantage of the fact that Topkapi Palace is within walking distance of several other major tourist attractions in Istanbul. Hagia Sophia Mosque

You’ll need less than five minutes to reach Hagia Sophia Mosque from Topkapi Palace. Hagia Sophia is famous for being a former Byzantine Eastern Orthodox cathedral that was turned into a mosque after the fall of Constantinople. It is renowned for its unique architecture, decorations, and rich history.

Basilica Cistern

Basilica Cistern is located just 1,300 feet from the Topkapi Palace’s main entrance. Built in the sixth century, this remarkable water tank is exceptionally well preserved and serves as a testament to Byzantine architectural prowess. Besides being the largest antique cistern in the world, Basilica Cistern is notable for its two columns, which have Medusa’s head at their base. It is believed that these Medusa heads were brought from some ancient Roman buildings and installed at the site at a later date.

Gulhane Park
