Trying to keep track of different time zones can be as tricky as doing arithmetic with a hangover. Australia is waking up when England is going to sleep, India is an additional half an hour ahead and behind everyone else, and it can be Monday in the US’s Howland Islands but Wednesday in the Line Islands of Kiribati. No wonder jet lag exists!

If you’re prone to being wide awake at 3 a.m. after traveling across time zones, these tips to will help combat your jet lag.

Plan Ahead

According to science, it takes one day to adapt per number of time zones you crossed. So, if you’re jetting over 5 zones, start your prep 5 days in advance. Begin by adjusting your sleep pattern by 15 minutes each day, and add a clock with the time at your destination to your phone.

You Are What You Eat

Having a gin on the plane may be tempting, but it’s best to avoid alcohol. Instead, load up on water as dehydration will make jet lag symptoms all the worse. Drinking water before you travel, during travel, and when you arrive will also help you feel more energetic.

Just Keep Moving

Lack of movement results in lethargy, so take brief walks during the flight and do some stretches in your seat. Once you arrive, you can even consider going to the gym as this will likely improve your quality of sleep. It’s also important to get out in the sunshine to reset your circadian system.
