Wheatear they’re dormant or still active, there’s always something thrilling about volcanoes, and seeing them in person is an epic adventure. Congo is home to quite a few, and these three are among the most spectacular ones you can find in all of Africa.

Mount Nyiragongo

Located deep inside the Virunga National Park, Mount Nyiragongo is one of Africa’s most notable active volcanoes with the largest known lava lake. It’s observed by a team of scientists due to its history of devastating eruptions, but that’s not stopping adrenaline-seekers from hiking in the area.

Mount Bisoke

If hiking active volcanoes simply isn’t your thing, how about dormant ones? Located on the border between Congo and Rwanda, Mount Bisoke became a huge hit with nature lovers because it’s home to hiking trails, crater lakes, and a colony of mountain gorillas.

Mount Sabyinyo

Many of the extinct volcanoes in Congo have a few things in common—they’re situated close to the Rwandan border and have mountain gorillas living on the slopes. That also happens to be the case with Mount Sabyinyo, one of the oldest dormant volcanoes in the Virunga Mountains.
