If you’re a fan of musicals, then you probably have places like NYC’s Broadway or London’s West End on your destination list. The thing is, there’s more than one place you can see the same musical—and the question is, does it really matter where you see it? The answer to this question is tricky because it really depends on a handful of factors.

A Musical’s History

Weirdly enough, when it comes to musicals, it’s not just about the music and the performance. There’s also a lot of history that goes into each musical, which is why the place that you see it actually does make a difference. For instance, The Phantom of the Opera first premiered at Her Majesty’s Theatre in the West End in 1986, and later on Broadway where it played at the Majestic Theater in 1988. It’s been showing at both locations ever since. For people that have a true appreciation for musicals and their origin, they may have no other option but to see it in London. Such is the case with so many other musicals.

Just For the Music

But if you’re someone who appreciates musicals for just the music and not much else, then it really shouldn’t matter where you see it. Even if you do have a deep appreciation for the origin story of the musical, you’ll still have the time of your life seeing a musical at the place where it didn’t originally premiere.
