Dominican Republic is More Than Just a Beautiful Beach

Many couples enchanted by beautiful white-sanded beaches, palm trees and crystal clear water choose Dominican Republic to be their wedding and honeymoon destination. However, these things aren’t the only ones which bind to this island-country.

Dominican Republic, located in the Caribbeans, was accidentally discovered by Christopher Columbus on December 5th 1492. By naming it Hispaniola, he become the founder of this large island and this was just the beginning of Dominican Republic’s story.

This country with a Holy Bible on its flag is the second largest island in the Caribbeans, right after Cuba. Today, Dominican Republic shares the island with Haiti, however, in the past, the island was jointly named Hispaniola.

Latin Americans in general love to be late, but Dominicans are winning the race. If you arranged a meeting with a local fellow, you should know that they aren’t punctual, and they can arrive even an hour late.

Santo Domingo is the capital city and it was the first European city in the new world founded in 1496 by Bartholomew Columbus, the brother of Christopher Columbus. In 1936 Santo Domingo was renamed after the dictator Rafael Trujiillo and Ciudad the Trujiilo was its official name until 1961. After his assassination it gained back its original name.
