Even though Belize is small and is often overshadowed by its neighbors, the Central American country has a rich culinary scene. The country has a diverse population, making for lots of different influences on the local dishes. There’s really something for everyone, even the pickiest eaters. Here are five dishes you must try while in Belize.

Ceviche

Belizian ceviche differs from its neighbors in that it’s made with raw conch and shrimp, making it less sweet and fish-based.

Tamales (Bollos)

Tamales found in Belize are wrapped in plantain leaves instead of corn husks and they’re made with seasoned chicken or pork wrapped in corn dough.

Conch Fritters

This popular deep-fried appetizer combines flour batter and chopped conch meat, and it’s served with a spicy dipping sauce.

Rice and Beans

Sure this may sound simple, but Belizean rice and beans are cooked in coconut milk and they’re always served together. It’s a side to most main dishes, especially chicken.

Chimole

Chimole is a Creole stew that gets its dark color from a mix of spices including dried red pepper Yucatan, which is roasted until it’s black. The pepper is ground and made into a paste and garlic, cumin, and oregano are added.
