For travelers looking at mobility and stability together, a new report suggests the two often overlap. According to Henley & Partners, the countries that score well on the Global Peace Index also tend to have some of the world’s most useful passports, making the connection especially relevant for people considering life abroad or dual citizenship.
In the 2026 comparison, Europe features prominently. Switzerland, Ireland, Austria, Portugal, Finland, Denmark, and Czechia all appear among the countries that rank highly on both the peace index and the passport index. The report points to the Schengen Area as one reason European passports can offer broad regional access, with similar entry rights across 29 countries in the region.
Among the strongest European showings, Switzerland ranked third on the Global Peace Index and tied for fifth on the Passport Index, with visa-free access to 185 countries. Ireland and Austria both tied for fourth place on the passport ranking while placing fifth and sixth, respectively, on the peace index. Portugal also stood out, tying for fifth place on the Passport Index and ranking seventh on the Global Peace Index. Finland and Denmark tied for fourth on the passport list, while Czechia tied for seventh.
The broader picture in 2026 shows that peace and passport power are not limited to Europe. Singapore topped the passport ranking and placed eighth on the peace index, while Japan ranked second for passport strength and tenth for peace. Canada was the only North American country to make a strong appearance on both lists. At the same time, the report notes that the average passport now allows visa-free access to 108 countries, up sharply from 58 in 2006.
