Costa Rica is consistently rated one of the happiest and healthiest countries on earth. It’s surrounded by beaches and filled with national parks—and about a quarter of the country is actually jungle. While we love a nice beach resort as much as anyone, experiencing things that you can’t anywhere else is what traveling is all about, and Costa Rica is jam-packed with opportunities to explore. Exactly what is available to you will depend on where in the country you’re staying, but most hotels and hostels will offer excursions similar to these:

Climbing and Rappelling

For the adrenaline junkie, climbing and rappelling is a thrilling experience usually done in the mountains or by some kind of rock. In Costa Rica, there are places to do it alongside waterfalls! If you’re afraid of heights, though, don’t look down.

Rafting

Rent a raft and venture out to explore the country’s many beautiful rivers! Many companies will make rafting part of a longer tour and include time for swimming and wildlife-watching throughout the day.

Visit Zarcero

See the old Catholic church and check out the topiary gardens in this small town situated 5,700 feet above sea level. There’s even a nature reserve with plenty of opportunities for hiking.
