Feel Like Crying During Your Flight? There’s a Reason Why

When you are 30,000 feet high in the air, emotions can run high too. You may feel your eyes welling up a bit more than usual, and a heartwarming scene in a movie could send you completely over the edge.

It is not totally uncommon to shed a few tears when embarking on a plane ride. After all, the experience often involves having to say goodbye to loved ones or even a place that has found its way into your heart.

Yet, according to science, being more likely to cry while flying is a real thing.

Being up in the air leads to a change in altitude, and cabin pressure can result in lower oxygen levels. All this can cause dehydration and fatigue which then impacts our emotional state.

If you’re an anxious flier, that can also play a part. Traveling is stressful, with long layovers, rushing to boarding gates, and often going hours without food or sleep. No wonder your mood is all over the place!

In addition, all the distractions we usually have, like talking to friends or playing on our phones are suspended for the duration of the flight. That leaves a lot of time to just sit with our thoughts…

So, next time you fly, we suggest wearing waterproof mascara in case you do end up spilling a tear or two onboard.
