Travel bloggers Shelley and Lars Roes have done what most of us can only dream of—taking the leap of faith required to become full-time travelers and bloggers.

“Back in 2016, Perth, Western Australia; with pen and paper, we mapped out our hopes and dreams for the future,” they recall. “We wanted to travel and to volunteer overseas. So we listed all the countries we’d like to visit… the list it got bigger and bigger.”

Having composed their list they came to the conclusion they needed to make it happen.

“We have sold all of our belongings and are road tripping our way around the world,” they write on their website. “We’re sharing our road trip journeys, destinations, inspirations, tips, and photography along the way. When our adventure began, it was only going to be for a year… but the paths less travelled still called our name… the journey continues.”

4 years later and having ticked over 30 countries on their maps, the couple is now committed more than ever to life on the road. On 29 January 2020, they arrived in Africa to begin their road trip across the continent for a few years.

In a recent blog post, they share their take on the South African bush. “We Australians generally like to think that we aren’t too delicate and can handle a challenge or two,” writes Lars Roes. “Surely there must be similarities of sorts between living in the Australian bush and here? Well, if you haven’t been to Africa before then you can throw those preconceptions out the window.”

According to Roes, their daily routine in the South African bush is not governed by time on a watch, but by sunrise and sunset. “Days of the week and the hour of the day are of little importance,” he writes. “There are no sounds except that of the South African bush and anything living within. It took us a few days to normalize to this new setting and another few to feel like a part of the bush itself.”

Following the couples’ adventures on social media is a real treat!
