People in Greece have some of the highest life expectancies in the world. Many put it down to the sunny climate and warm temperatures, but the Mediterranean diet that is followed on the island has a lot to do with it. If you’re heading to Greece, here are 4 things absolutely worth tasting.

Spanakopita

Greeks are famous for the spinach and feta combination, but the absolute best way to have it is as spanakopita. The classic pie is made using layers of phyllo pastry which keeps it light and flaky, while the filling is just—chef’s kiss.

Souvlaki

Tender and juicy, souvlaki is Greece’s version of a grilled kebab. Served on skewers, the meat ranges from chicken to lamb and pork.

Ouzo

If you can handle your liquor (and don’t mind the taste of licorice), you must try ouzo. The signature Greek drink is made from distilled grapes and flavored with spices like aniseed.

All the Olives

You can’t go to the birthplace of olive oil and not have olives, right? Right! Olives are a part of many Greek dishes, but the locals are also known to indulge in the little guys as a snack. Don’t be surprised if you’re served olives with bread for breakfast. Olives marinated in spices and other aromatics are also particularly good.
