Casablanca is one of Morocco’s most popular tourist attractions, especially with cinema lovers, but not all of its top spots are straight out of an Old Hollywood movie. Hassan II Mosque was completed less than three decades ago, but it’s already considered as one of the symbols of this beautiful city.

Designed by the French architect Michel Pinseau at the request of King Hassan II, this magnificent mosque was finished in 1993. Artisans from all over Morocco took part in its building process and helped create its beautiful mosaics, stone and marble floors and columns.

Minaret of Hassan II Mosque stands out as its most striking feature. At 690 feet, it ranks as the second tallest minaret in the world. Its height isn’t even the only thing that makes it impressive—the same can be said about its splendid chrome and green tiles.

Hassan II Mosque is currently the second-largest functioning mosque in Africa, but its size isn’t the only reason why it’s impossible to miss. Its location on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean makes it one of Casablanca’s focal points. You can see it from the outside at any time, but you’ll have to sign up for the guided tour if you’re a non-Muslim trying to enter the mosque.
