Hiking is fun and relaxing, but it is also not always just a “walk in the park,” as most people think when deciding to try it out. Setting off on a hike unprepared is one of the worst things you can do, as the experience comes with a lot of unexpected challenges.

Besides wearing proper clothes and shoes, there are several things you should bring with you when going on a hike that will make your life a lot easier on rough terrain. Check them out below and get yourself ready for anything that nature might throw your way.

Water and Food

All that hiking will make you hungry and dehydrated. To keep your energy levels up, make sure that you have plenty of water and food packed. Energy bars, for example, are great to take with you for a quick, protein-filled snack.

Navigation Tools

A navigation tool is a must when going on a hike. It will help you to get back on track if you get lost and help you avoid some dangerous trails. GPS devices, maps, and compasses are preferred, but your smartphone is also a great choice, as long as you make sure to have it charged.

Warm Clothes

Having some warm clothes in your backpack will keep you prepared for some curveballs that nature throws at you. The weather might be sunny and warm when you start, but that can often change in a minute, especially if you are climbing up to a higher altitude.

First Aid

Don’t even think of getting on a hike without a first aid kit. Bandages, plasters, cleansing wipes, liquid for cleaning wounds, and cream against insect bites should be with you at all times.

Multitool

Having a multitool will prepare you for some unexpected challenges if you have to cut or repair something. There are many on the markets geared towards hiking requirements, but a Swiss-Army knife will do as well.
