Hostels don’t have many amenities that you might find at hotels, but there’s one thing that truly makes them stand out—a shared kitchen. It’s one of the best accommodations that many hostels have in store and here are some useful tips to make the most of it.

Storing Food

Hostel kitchens usually come with a huge fridge where you can store your food. They are often overcrowded, but food will go in and out as guests come and go. When storing your food here, always make sure to mark it with your name and check-in/check-out date so someone else wouldn’t take it.

Free Food

Taking unmarked food is not a rarity at hostels because a lot of former guests leave their food behind. If that’s the case with your hostel, there will probably be a shelf in the kitchen and the fridge clearly marked with “free food”.

Cooking Food

The main benefit of a shared kitchen is that you can cook your own meals, instead of spending a fortune eating out.

Social Aspect

A shared kitchen is secretly a great place to meet other travelers. You might even end up bonding over food and teaching each other to cook some traditional dishes from your respective countries.
