Traveling should be a time to relax, have fun, and explore new places, and in our experience, there are few things that can ruin a trip more than an unexpected illness. The process of travel is physically taxing and comes with no shortage of opportunities to pick up a bug, so it’s essential to take preventative measures where possible. While we can’t plan for everything, we have discovered a few simple tricks for staying healthy on the road that have helped us to make the most out of our travels.
Prioritize sleep
Good quality sleep is crucial for maintaining the health of your immune system, but catching z’s can be tricky when you’re in an unfamiliar space. To make things easier, we recommend wearing an eye mask to block out light and create a more peaceful and restorative environment. Noise canceling headphones can also make a big difference on flights, or pack a portable white noise machine to use at your accommodation.
Eat smart
Experiencing the cuisine of a particular location is often considered to be one of the best parts of travel. While we don’t disagree, there’s no denying that certain foods, like sugar and alcohol, can suppress your immune system and leave you more susceptible to illness. To prevent hunger on the go and give your body the nutrition it needs, we recommend packing a stash of healthy snacks such as nuts, dried fruit, or low-sugar protein bars. You can also try taking immune-boosting supplements including vitamin D and probiotics.
Wash your hands
This one may seem obvious, but proper handwashing is one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of illness-causing germs, yet it’s often overlooked. Wash your hands often with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds, and avoid touching your face as much as possible. Keep antibacterial wipes in your purse or carry-on to use on shared spaces, and don’t forget to disinfect your cell phone.
