La Isla de las Muñecas aka the Island of the Dolls is the perfect outing in Mexico City for fans of the macabre.

More than 50 years ago, a man named Don Julian Santana left his family to live on an Island on Teshuilo Lake. Don believed that a young girl had drowned in the lake and spent his life paying tribute to the lost soul. He did this by collecting hundreds of dolls and hanging them around the forest.

What started out as a touching tribute is now a creepy outing for fans of mystery and the macabre. The dolls that were strung from the trees are now decomposing and look more sinister than adorable. When Santana found the dolls, they were often missing limbs or eyes. He did not attempt to fix them but hung them in the condition they were in.

The Island of the Dolls is located just 17 miles south of Mexico City. It is located in Xochimilco and you can get there by boat. To make the experience even more haunting, look out for water snakes on your journey over to the island. There are many.
