Palermo is worth visiting for its architecture alone, and some of its most stunning buildings have one thing in common. Magnificent cathedral and churches are scattered all around this Sicilian city, and here are three worth exploring during your visit.
Palermo Cathedral
Palermo Cathedral is one of the city’s top attractions and your visit will be incomplete if you don’t check it out. It went through many renovations since opening its doors in 1185, and that’s one of the reasons why it mixes different architectural styles, ranging from Norman and Gothic to Baroque and Neoclassical.
Church of the Gesù
Church of the Gesù is pretty tiny when compared to Palermo Cathedral, but that’s not stopping it from being a huge hit with the tourists. It’s one of the best examples of the Sicilian Baroque in the entire city, and it’s worth visiting for its historic façade and stucco and marble sculptures.
Church of St. Mary of the Admiral
Also known as Martorana, this church is one of the most stunning attractions overlooking Piazza Bellini, and it’s located right next to the Church of San Cataldo. They’re both breathtaking in their own right, but Martorana made it to our list due to its magnificent mosaics and a mixture of architectural styles that influenced it over the years, most notably the Norman-Arab-Byzantine style.
