A quick Google search on how to save money while traveling will yield tons of results about getting good deals on flights or the lowest possible rates on last-minute hotel rooms. While these are certainly well and good ways to cut costs, it’s also easy to fall into the trap of thinking we don’t need to budget for anything else. Souvenirs in particular are a sneaky travel expense that can add up quickly if we’re not careful. If there’s anything you’ve absolutely got to have, don’t let us stop you from treating yourself, but in our experience, these are a few souvenirs that ultimately end up collecting dust in the garage.

Magnets & Other Trinkets

While we understand wanting to stick something that’ll remind you of your trip to the fridge, the truth is that things like location-themed magnets and shot glasses are usually not even made in the locations they advertise. You’re better off getting pictures of yourself in the location and hanging those.

Anything You Can Order Online

Be sure to search for whatever it is you may be interested in buying on a trip before you purchase. Often you can find the same items without the markup geared at tourists. Stick to buying things you can’t order from home.

Food

This one is tricky because it can definitely be tempting when you discover something delicious to want to bring some of it home with you. While this is fine in theory, be sure to check the laws around traveling your food so that you don’t end up having to throw it away at the airport.
