Nazaré is a small coastal town north of Lisbon, known for being the site of some of the biggest waves in the world. With fantastic food, welcoming locals, and the surfing conditions of a lifetime, this is the ideal destination for any ocean lovers looking for an adventure.

Nazaré Canyon

The giant waves of Nazaré occur as a result of the Nazaré canyon. This underwater phenomenon is the largest underwater canyon in Europe, with a depth of 5,000 meters. The canyon increases and converges the incoming Atlantic ocean swell which, along with the local currents, dramatically enlarges wave heights.

Because of these monster waves, many big wave surf records have been broken in Nazaré, with pros surfing waves upwards of 80ft tall!

Surfing for All Levels

But don’t be put off by these intimidating heights if you’re more of an amateur surfer. While the Praia de Norte beach gets all the attention for giant waves, there are also areas with waves suitable for beginners and swimming spots for those who prefer to go board-free!

Traditional Fishing Community

While it is now known for surfing, Nazaré also remains a traditional fishing community. Be ready to eat fantastic fresh fish and seafood, and look out for women in traditional embroidered skirts hawking the day’s catch!
