While there are many popular destinations in the State of California, Palm Springs is famously known as a holiday destination for the rich. However, we’re here to show you that Palm Springs offers much more than warm weather and luxury hotels.

Escape the Winter Cold

Since Palm Springs is located in the middle of the desert, it’s popular to visit in the colder months for a couple of days to soak up the sunshine. THis is what makes January through April Palm Springs’s peak tourism season. However, the weather in the desert does not get too cold, making it a perfect place to hike or sit by the pool while enjoying the beautiful scenery.

Downtown Palm Springs

While downtown is slightly more touristy, it’s a bustling place to visit, with shops, art galleries, and restaurants. You will surely be busy all weekend if you spend a couple of days downtown.

Outdoor Activities

With such great weather, plenty of outdoor activities are situated in Palm Springs’ beautiful sunshine. Palm Springs is an hour from the well-known Joshua Tree national park. A perfect day trip activity where you can park and enjoy many hiking trails. You can even camp, climb, ride or horse, or ride your bikes within the national park. In addition, Joshua Tree is known to be one of the best locations for stargazing in the country.

“The Shining” is one of the most classic movies of the 20th century and legendary director Stanley Kubrick’s magnum opus. Starring Jack Nicholson and featuring one of the scariest mind-bending plots in the history of cinema, it’s hard to find a person who hasn’t seen this 1980 film.

The setting of “The Shining” at a rural hotel is something that anyone who has seen the movie is sure to remember. Did you know that the two hotels used to film the movie are in the U.S. and still up and running? Check out these two hotels, located in Oregon and Colorado, if you want to get a taste of this classic film.

Timberline Lodge (Government Camp, Oregon)

The exterior shots of the Overlook Hotel were filmed at the Timberline Lodge in Government Camp, Oregon. You will immediately recognize the exterior of this mountain lodge about an hour and a half east of Portland, located next to Mt. Hood in one of Oregon’s most scenic spots.

The Stanley Hotel (Estes Park, Colorado)

This legendary hotel located next to the Rocky Mountain National Park inspired Stephen King’s novel which gave rise to the movie. It is supposedly one of America’s most haunted hotels, and you’ll be able to see iconic interior filming locations like the famous hallway where the twins stood menacingly and Room 217.
