Look up and be mesmerized as Chile’s Atacama Desert takes you on a cosmic journey like no other. Renowned as the world’s best stargazing destination, the Atacama Desert offers a celestial spectacle that will leave you awestruck.

Between the Andes Mountains, Atacama’s high-altitude and minimal light pollution create an ideal environment for stargazing. Numerous observatories dot the desert landscape, providing visitors with unparalleled access to the universe’s wonders. The European Southern Observatory (ESO) operates the breathtaking La Silla Observatory, where state-of-the-art telescopes reveal the secrets of distant galaxies.

Join guided night tours to witness the Milky Way in its full splendor, with constellations so vivid they seem to come alive. The Atacama Desert’s clear skies and dry climate make it a haven for astronomers and stargazers alike.

In the daytime, explore Moon Valley, an otherworldly landscape that mirrors the lunar surface. As the sun sets, prepare for a celestial show that has earned Atacama its reputation as a premier stargazing destination.

traveler is a small coastal town on the classic traveler route in Peru. While most people visit this sleepy town on the edge of the Atacama Desert to take a boat tour of the Islas Ballestas (Peru’s version of the Galapagos islands), that’s not the only way to explore the amazing nature in Paracas National Park…

Hire Bikes

There are plenty of places to hire bikes very cheaply in Paracas. Reserve your bikes the night before and set off no later than 8am. The Atacama is the driest desert in the world, and you don’t want to be caught out in the midday sun. Take plenty of water, sunhats, and get ready for a day of tough but exhilarating cycling!

Stop at Stunning Beaches

The Paracas Nature Reserve is full of stunning beaches where it’s possible to take a dip to cool off after a few hours of strenuous peddling. Look out for interesting bird life (including flamingos), striking red cliffs, and truly spectacular views of the vast surrounding desert.

Take a Lunch Break

If that wasn’t enough of a selling point, there’s even somewhere to stop for lunch and a cold beer! Head to Lagunillas beach (it’s well-signposted) where you’ll find several restaurants offering a menu of the day, including local seafood and a few veggie options. These restaurants are more expensive than others you’ll find in Peru, but the amazing setting is worth it!

A Short Ride Home

Ask folks at the restaurant to direct you to the shorter route home (we guarantee your legs will be feeling like jelly by this point!) and head back to Paracas in the afternoon. You’ll be back in time for Happy Hour and some well-deserved pisco sours!

Hands served as inspiration for many amazing artists over the years, including some pretty skilled sculptures. Their spectacular hand-shaped sculptures are now scattered all around the world, and Latin American countries are home to quite a few – including these three.

Mano del Desierto (Atacama Desert, Chile)

One of the most popular hand-shaped sculptures in the entire world is safely tucked away in the middle of Chile’s Atacama Desert. Designed by the Chilean sculpture Mario Irarrázabal, this gigantic iron and concrete hand sculpture was meant to represent human vulnerability and helplessness.

La Mano (Punta del Este. Uruguay)

Mano del Desierto isn’t the only famous hand sculpture crafted by Irarrázabal. Located in Punta del Este, Uruguay’s charming resort town, La Mano aka Los Dedos is just as impressive and it shows fingers emerging from the sand. It’s a warning to swimmers and surfers in this area, known for its strong waves.

Las Pozas (Xilitla, Mexico)

Unlike the previous two attractions, Las Pozas doesn’t feature an isolated hand attraction, but a bunch that you can discover during your visit. It’s a sculpture park filled with surrealistic creations by Edward James, buried deep inside the tropical rainforest in the Sierra Gorda mountains.

Deserts are usually not the most popular tourist attractions because people usually think that there’s nothing much to see here, but those people are simply wrong. With its impressive geysers, lagoons, and sand dunes, the Atacama desert is actually one of the most stunning places in the world, and here are a few fun things that you can see and do there.

Moon Valley

As you can already imagine, Moon Valley or Valle De La Luna, pretty much resembles the surface of the moon which makes it one of the most unique places in the world. Sunset is the best time to visit this place and enjoy its breathtaking sand dunes and beautifully colored rock formations.

Pink Flamingos

Exotic animals and plants are not something you’d expect to see in a desert, but the Atacama is actually one of the places in the world where you can see pink flamingos in the wild and this is actually a very popular activity among tourists.

Stargazing

Atacama desert is at a high altitude and has minimal light, and this makes it one of the best places in the world for observing the night sky and a paradise for stargazers. Here you can even rent a telescope or visit the most expensive radio telescope in the world called ALMA.

Remember when we learned about the Atacama desert in school? The desert in South America, which is the driest place in the world, and almost has no life? Well, you’d be happy to learn that it’s easy to reach Atacama desert. If you want to visit it, all you need to do is book a flight from Santiago to Kalami, a small town in the Andes.

The largest copper mines in the world are located here, and Chileans say they have as much importance to the market as Saudi Arabia for the oil market.

For those who feel adventurous and want to wander around, you can go about 90 km southwest to the oldest villages in South America, founded in the 15th century by San Pedro de Atacama.

You can enjoy the village square, overlooking the vast Andes peaks, where dozens of young people sing and play guitars with campfires and warm tea made from aromatic coca leaves. On the dusty streets, you can find llama meat and fresh chewy leaves.

Be careful though. The narrow streets filled with holes and sandy gravels, where the wheels of cars can get stuck, are not for everyone. Be prepared for clouds of sand and dust in this oasis in the heart of Atacama.

Chile is home to many natural wonders you can’t find anywhere else, including Atacama Desert. One of its most popular attractions is an enormous hand rising through the sand that will make you wonder if your eyes are playing tricks on you.

The sculpture is known by the name Mano del Desierto aka the Hand of the Dessert. It isn’t easy to reach it, but once you do, it will feel like you entered a set of a sci-fi movie taking place on a different planet.

Calling this sculpture huge would be an understatement. It stands at 11 meters and has a base of iron and concrete. The sculptor Mario Irarrázabal chose Atacama Desert as its home for a reason—he wanted to fill its empty space with something imposing people would search for.

The meaning of this massive sculpture is up for interpretation, but Irarrázabal said it’s supposed to emphasize human vulnerability and helplessness. This explanation certainly makes sense since the Hand of the Dessert is surrounded by nothing but sand and you’ll feel fully exposed to the forces of nature once you get there.
