Cape Town is home to more amazing beaches than we can count, and they’re all special in their own right. Boulders Beach is the most unusual of them all, and that’s exactly the reason why you shouldn’t miss it for the world. Here are three things you can do at South Africa’s quirkiest beach.

Penguin Watching

The main reason why Boulders Beach became such a huge hit with the tourists is the colony of African penguins that live on its shores. They settled here during the 80s, and the colony has grown to about 3,000 penguins over the years, roaming freely in their natural environment.

Easy Access

Boulders Beach technically isn’t located in Cape Town itself, but its suburb called Simon’s Town. You can easily reach it by car or train, and turn your visit into a day trip by exploring some of the nearby attractions, including the Cape of Good Hope.

Natural Beauty

Even if it wasn’t for the penguins, the natural beauty of Boulders Beach and its surroundings would still take your breath away. The beach is sheltered by granite boulders that are hundreds of million years old and its crystal-clear waters will leave you in awe.

Like every other city with an oceanfront location, Cape Town is the perfect destination for beach lovers. Whether you’re trying to simply relax or practice water sports, you’ll find a beach that suits your needs, and some of them can’t be found anywhere else in the world.

Boulders Beach

Unlike other beaches in Cape Town, Boulders Beach isn’t one of those places where you simply go to soak up the sun. It’s best known for being home to the colony of African penguins, and that’s the main reason why countless tourists flock to its shores every day.

Muizenberg Beach

You’ll never run out of vibrant and colorful places to check out while in Cape Town, and Muizenberg Beach is one of the very best. Brightly painted beach huts are scattered all around it and they transformed it into one of the city’s most picture-perfect spots.

Clifton 4th

Located in the affluent Clifton neighborhood, Clifton 4th resembles classic beaches more than the previous two, but there’s something that makes it special. Tourists and locals alike can’t resist its almost pure white sand that sets this beach apart from all else.

Penguins are most commonly associated with Antarctica and other polar destinations, but did you know that they can also be spotted in South Africa? That’s right, the African continent is home to a significant colony of penguins that can be found in its southernmost country.

If you are planning a trip to South Africa and want to spend time up-and-close with these adorable animals, add these spots to your list of places to visit!

Boulders Beach

Just outside of the big city of Cape Town is a small beach that happens to host a colony of over 3,000 African penguins. This beautiful beach, surrounded by granite boulders, is a place where the penguins can be seen and observed up close and personal, but always with respect.

Stony Point

Betty’s Bay is a small town in the Western Cape province of South Africa which is known for the Stony Point Nature Reserve, an especially great place to see these little birds. A protected conservation area for penguins, you’ll be able to see a large number of these birds and your $1.50 entrance fee will go towards protecting them.

Dassen Island

A few miles off of the South African mainland and an hour or so north of Cape Town is Dassen Island, a nature reserve which can be visited by boat as part of a private trip. If you’re lucky enough to go, you’ll be able to observe a breeding colony of African penguins in their natural habitat.
