When you think of countries famous for bread, your mind probably goes to France first. After all, French people are often portrayed eating a croissant for breakfast or carrying a baguette home on their way from work. But it’s in fact Germany that should be proclaimed the European capital of bread. Here’s why.

When it comes to food, Germany is known for sausages and beer. However, their bread is arguably the best in the whole world. Apparently, Germany had whole grain bread ever since the time of Gauls and Visigoths back in the 5th century.

“Given its northern latitude, Berlin’s climate was not conducive to wheat production. Grains, such as rye and spelt, tended to thrive better here and subsequently produced breads, such as Roggenbrot (rye) and Volkornbrot (whole-grain) that are still consumed today. The wheat-based breads like Weißbrot remained in the South in cities like Munich and Stuttgart,” food writer Samuel Fromartz told NPR.

Besides whole grain rye and spelt bread, Germany also has sweet breads with added dried fruits and nuts.

The common processed white bread is available in supermarkets around Germany, but it’s not as popular as their amazing loaves. A devoted bread lover can discover over 300 varieties of German bread!
