Bruges has always been one of Belgium’s most popular tourist destinations. However, it is safe to say that the critically acclaimed black comedy “In Bruges” made it an even bigger tourist hotspot. Especially for movie buffs.

This is why a visit to Bruges shouldn’t be complete without hitting the streets of this amazing city and checking out some of the real-life locations where “In Bruges” was actually filmed. Here are some recommendations below.

Relais Bourgondisch Cruyce

This charming little hotel served as the hideout for the two main characters, Ray (Colin Farrell) and Ken (Brendan Gleeson). It still operates today, and you can book a room to stay here during your visit to Bruges.

Location: Wollestraat 41-47

Groeninge Museum

Groeninge Museum is dedicated to Flemish and Belgian art. It houses paintings by Jan van Eyck, Pieter Pourbus, Vigor van Heede, and many more. The scene where Ray gets fascinated by Hieronymus Bosch’s “The Last Judgment” is filmed here.

Location: Dijver 12

Belfry of Bruges

This medieval tower is one of the city’s most famous landmarks. It once served as a treasury and archive but is now converted into a touristic attraction and an observation point. This is where Ken and Harry (Ralf Fiennes) have their big shutout. On the other hand, the plaza in front of the tower is where Ray delivers some of his best bits.

Location: Markt 7

Koningin Astridpark

Located in the heart of Bruges, Koningin Astridpark is the setting of one of the most powerful scenes in “In Bruges.” Here Ray tries to commit suicide before Ken, who was set to kill him, stops him from doing so.

Craft Beers

Belgium beers are often very strong but always very good. You should ask for recommendations before starting to drink. Take a tour of a local brewery to find out more about the brewing process.

Bruges

Bruges in Belgium is often called ‘the Venice of the North’. Cruising along a canal is a great way to see the dramatic buildings of the city or to relax after sightseeing.

Dare to visit one of the more eccentric venues in Bruges. The Lucifernum, where you can have a drink, listen to live music and watch performance art, used to be a Masonic temple. Freemasons are interred in a cemetery on the grounds.

Waterloo

Waterloo was the site of Napoleon’s final defeat. Visit the town and climb up Lion’s Mound for a view of the battlefield. It’s not a difficult climb and history buffs will love the experience.

Mannekin Pis

You can’t go to Belgium without visiting the Mannekin Pis. This bronze statue of a small boy taking a wee is well-known throughout the world. Tourists love it although it’s not a big deal to residents.

Doel

Be inspired by the street art in Doel. The village is dying but street artists have created colorful art on the crumbling buildings. It’s a dystopian but fascinating sight.
