When you think of England, you probably think about the queen and the palaces she lives in. Windsor Castle is indeed beautiful and a must-see for any first-time tourist, but there are actually castles all over the United Kingdom that are absolutely worth visiting, not only in England but in Scotland and Wales as well. Here are a few of the most beautiful around the UK.

Scotland: Dunrobin Castle

Home to the Dunrobin Clan since the 14th century, this beautiful castle features architecture reminiscent of the palace of Versailles and others in France. Not only is the castle itself a sight to behold, but you can also view the gardens as well as visiting their tearoom, museum, and even a collection of live falcons.

Wales: Conwy Castle

Conwy Castle looks a lot like how you probably drew castles as a child. It is large and foreboding, made of stone bricks, and has turrets shaped just like in a fairy tale book. It was built for King Edward I and is a mastery of medieval architecture and fortification. On a visit, you can climb up the towers for an awesome view.

Scottish Countryside: Kilchurn Castle

Built in the 15th century, Kilchurn Castle features a 5-story tower house that looms over its otherwise-mostly-ruined structure. The ruins are part of what makes it so picturesque. It’s set in one of the most beautiful places in the world, with a lake on one side and green mountains on the other.

Château de la Mothe-Chandeniers is a 13th-century castle located 200 miles southwest of Paris in the Les Trois-Moutiers commune in France. It was built and owned by the Bauçay family in the 1200s. The castle was taken several times by the English during the Hundred Years’ War and devastated during the French Revolution.

https://www.instagram.com/p/B3OnM3FnPnB/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

Over the years, it was owned by many different people, and restoration attempts were made in 1809 and 1870. Unfortunately, in 1932, a huge fire broke out and damaged most of the buildings in the castle, which after that stood abandoned for 85 years.

But instead of letting it become a ruin, in 2017, a group of locals joined together in an attempt to buy the property from its current owner and save the castle from further destruction. They took their proposition online, and with the help of the Adopte un château association and the heritage preservation start-up Dartagnans, created a crowdfunding campaign.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BwCzW1Ehwb7/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

The project was the first of its kind in France, and it soon went viral, grabbing the attention of thousands of people from all over the world, who all participated with their donations. The community raised over €1,600,000 and collectively bought the castle.

https://www.instagram.com/p/B23zth1n8XO/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

As a result of this, every person became a co-owner and a guardian of the castle. Everyone has an equal say in the decisions regarding the castle’s future, but their biggest motive is to save and preserve this beautiful landmark for generations to come.

https://www.instagram.com/p/B3ctG6qgJpb/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

Once a private property, the grounds are now open to the public, and anyone willing to donate 50 euros or more can become a share-holder of the castle. So, if you’ve ever wanted to own a castle, you can make your wish come true by taking part in saving this magical place.

“A masterpiece of nature, standing between the earth and the sky, between the continent and the ocean, where the tides change as rapidly as a galloping horse.” This is how Victor Hugo described these remarkable remains of ancient architecture.

Mont Saint-Michel is a small town located on a rocky island 1 km off the northern coast of France, at the end of the Couesnon River in the Lower Normandy region.

Construction began in the distant 709s. In 1874, Mont Saint-Michel was declared a historical monument and is under UNESCO protection ever since.

You can’t live here, since there are only 41 inhabitants and most of them are priests, but you are more than welcome to visit this fairytale-like place.

The story behind Mont Saint-Michel is linked to a legend that says that Saint Michael appeared to the bishop Albert and told him to build a monastery out of rock, but Albert ignored this request until Saint Michael got angry and burned his head with his finger. So, of course, Albert finally decided to listen to the Saint and built what we know today as a tiny, charming, French village in the middle of the sea.

Scotland’s capital city is a vacation paradise for those that love a mixture of culture, history, and nature. Edinburgh is a destination that is worth the effort.

Here are four sights that you must see while you’re in Edinburgh.

Arthur’s Seat

This extinct volcano is one of the most recognizable and attention-grabbing spots in all of Edinburgh. The largest and most distinctive of all of the hills that surround Edinburgh, a short hike to the top provides you with unbeatable views of the city and the North Sea.

Edinburgh Castle

This castle/fort combination dominates the skyline of the Edinburgh Old Town. It’s been occupied by humans for over two millennia, and now hosts the Edinburgh Royal Castle. It’s touristy and a little expensive, but it’s beautiful and worth the journey.

Royal Mile

The gorgeous main drag of Edinburgh’s Old Town is the Royal Mile, which is full of beautiful old architecture and historical sights, such as the Tron Kirk. You can also shop for traditional products such as Scottish whiskey here!

https://www.instagram.com/p/Bc7fUaUBjnP/

National Museum of Scotland

The fascinating (and free!) National Museum of Scotland is a must-visit in Edinburgh. Here, you can see interesting and varied artifacts, such as the stuffed carcass of Dolly the Sheep and a dinosaur skeleton. It’s great for families and kids, too!
