A trip to Egypt is incomplete if you don’t check out Alexandria because it’s one of the best reminders of the country’s ancient past. Museums are some of the best places to explore its rich history, and these three are a good place to start.

Alexandria National Museum

Alexandria National Museum is one of the city’s best places to explore Egypt’s rich history. Located inside a restored Italianate palace, this museum covers three floors filled with over 1,800 artifacts, covering both the Pharaonic epoch and the Hellenistic and Roman periods.

Bibliotheca Alexandrina

Alexandria’s most popular tourist attraction is one of the world’s largest libraries, but this isn’t its only purpose. In addition to paying homage to the ancient Library of Alexandria, it’s also home to four museums, including Antiquities Museum, Manuscript Museum, Sadat Museum, and History of Science Museum.

Royal Jewelry Museum

Many of Egypt’s leading museums have an impressive ancient jewelry collection, but none compares to this one. Its collection of jewelry once belonged to the Muhammad Ali Dynasty, but the museum is also filled with 19th-century paintings, statues, and decorative pieces that give the former palace that it’s housed in a special charm.

Egypt is an amazing country with thousands of years of history and the famous pyramids which are one of the seven wonders of the world. Cairo houses the oldest archaeological museum in the middle east, the Egyptian museum. Standing since 1902, this museum holds wonders of archaeology, art, and architecture dating back to the Predynastic period and up to the Greco-Roman era. There’s tons to see there, so here are some of the highlights.

Masks of Yuya and Thuya

These beautifully detailed gold-encrusted masks were found placed upon the mummies of Yuya and Thuya, the parents-in-law of Pharaoh Amenhotep III. These date back to the 18th dynasty in the 1300s BC, around 3300 years ago.

The Mummy Room

At the museum, you can pay a small extra fee to enter the room where many famous mummies including Rameses and King Tut lie in glass cases. They have all been removed from their sarcophagi, so yes, you will be looking directly at dead bodies. While this room isn’t for the squeamish, it will be deeply interesting to archaeology and embalming hobbyists alike.

Colossal Statues

The museum has many sculptures from across the ancient timeline, including the largest known sculpture of a family from ancient Egypt. This monument depicts Amenhotep III and his family.

The museum displays an extensive collection spanning from the Predynastic Period to the Greco-Roman Era. The architect of the building was selected through an international competition in 1895, which was the first of its kind, and was won by the French architect, Marcel Dourgnon. The museum was inaugurated in 1902 by Khedive Abbas Helmy II, and has become a historic landmark in downtown Cairo, and home to some of the world’s most magnificent ancient masterpieces. Among the museum’s unrivaled collection are the complete burials of Yuya and Thuya, Psusennes I and the treasures of Tanis, and the Narmer Palette commemorating the unification of Upper and Lower Egypt under one king, which is also among the museum’s invaluable artifacts. The museum also houses the splendid statues of the great kings Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure, the builders of the pyramids at the Giza plateau. An extensive collection of papyri, sarcophagi and jewelry, among other objects, completes this uniquely expansive museum. Bibliotheca Alexandrina

The original Library of Alexandria was destroyed during the 3rd century Roman occupation and its reincarnation is Bibliotheca Alexandrina—a museum focused on Egyptian manuscripts, antiquities, science artifacts, etc. It was opened in 2002 after the design won a UNESCO-sponsored competition that had 1,400 entries.

St. Catherine’s Monastery

It’s located at the place where Moses received the Ten Commandments—at the base of Mount Sinai. The museum is home to golden icons, murals, mosaics, and illuminated manuscripts. You can even stay in the monastery overnight—they count on many visitors coming from Cairo, which is not very close.
