Ah, autumn. Many of us stateside look forward to the changing leaves, apple picking, and pumpkin spice-flavored everything once the weather starts to cool down and the days get shorter. While some parts of Europe have similar traditions, certain things can only be done in specific cities. Barcelona is an amazing location to visit year-round, but we prefer to visit in September and October once most tourists have gone home and the temperature has dropped a bit. From football to festivals, here are our favorite things to do in Barça in the fall.

Go to a Game

Camp Nou is home to the Barcelona Football Club and the fourth largest football (that’s football as in soccer) stadium in the world. Football season starts in August, though we find games are somewhat more enjoyable in September or October when the heat has broken.

Oktoberfest

We know what you’re thinking—isn’t Oktoberfest a German tradition? You’re right, but that hasn’t stopped Barcelonans from putting on a fall festival of their own. The event runs for 10 days every October and includes beer, live music, and traditional cuisine.

Celebrate with Castanyada

November 1st marks All Saints Day in Spain, a holiday many locals commemorate by eating roasted chestnuts, or “castanyas”. Street vendors begin selling the chestnuts, which are typically served hot and wrapped in newspaper, in the weeks leading up to the holiday. We definitely recommend giving them a try. Even if you don’t like them, they’re great for keeping your hands warm.

Football is known for its tailgates, but if you’re looking for a more family-friendly activity—it’s time to try a football stadium tour. On these tours, you’ll get to go behind-the-scenes and see where players prepare for games and have exclusive interviews, step onto the field, and learn the history behind each team and their stadium. These are the best football stadiums to tour with kids.

Lincoln Financial Field

Home to the Philadelphia Eagles, Lincoln Financial Field hosts public and private tours that last around 90 minutes and include a visit to the field, locker room, post-game interview room, broadcast booth, and press box.

CenturyLink Field

For a quieter experience at the Seattle Seahawks’ home, a football tour is the way to go. During the 90 minute tour, you’ll get behind-the-scenes look at where the team practices and enters the field on game day, the suite and club levels of the stadium, and a look into the locker room.

Soldier Field

While in Chicago, visit the Chicago Bears’ Soldier Field, the oldest football stadium in the U.S. The tour includes a look at the locker rooms, the South Courtyard, the Doughboy Statue, skyline suites, access to the field, and the grant concourse.

National Football League stadiums are located almost exclusively in some of the United States’ biggest cities, which means that they offer up some spectacular skyline backgrounds that can be seen from parts of the stands.

So, what are the most impressive and striking backgrounds that you can see in the league’s 29 stadiums? Here are the top three picks.

Heinz Field: Pittsburgh Steelers

The home of the Pittsburgh Steelers is located on the South Shore of Pittsburgh, an American city whose skyline is rivaled by few. From the cheap seats at the top of the bleachers, you’ll be able to see one of the many impressive buildings that tower over the city.

CenturyLink Field: Seattle Seahawks

The Seattle Seahawks’ majestic home field, consistently rated as one of the best stadiums in the National Football League, is also lucky enough to have Seattle’s imposing skyline peer out behind the north stands of this raucous stadium.

Soldier Field: Chicago Bears

Located just to the south of the United States’ third-largest city is Soldier Field, where the picturesque location on the shores of Lake Michigan allows those in the upper deck to spot the Chicago skyline. You’ll even be able to see the Willis Tower, the country’s third-tallest building.
