Nearly every city you visit will have one, and they all have the same format. You sign up, meet a tour group someplace public, and a guide takes you through as many as 15 landmarks all in a few hours. And it’s absolutely free. You won’t be able to spend much time in any one place, but you’ll get a feel for the city and figure out which sights you’ll want to come back to. (Just be prepared to tip your tour guide.)
Want to get a feel for the tastes, scents, culture, and people of a new city? Pop by a market. These will be full of local color. You can get souvenirs, fresh foods, and maybe even some free samples. You’ll also be able to meet locals to ask for recommendations, or just to hang out with—as markets are generally full of people.
Now that you’ve gotten yourself a baguette or whatever at your local market, where should you take it? Why, to a park, of course! Like markets, they’re free and full of locals, sometimes even having free concerts to listen to while you lounge. It’s a great, relaxing thing to do when you’re in a new city and, did we mention it’s free?
