Kenya is a vibrant country in East Africa brimming with awe-inspiring landscapes as well as a rich history and culture. Home to an abundance of wildlife and some of the largest nature reserves in the world, it’s a destination best known for safaris, but that’s certainly not all that Kenya has to offer. From the Maasai Mara to the beaches of the Indian Ocean, Kenya provides travelers with the opportunity to enjoy a diverse range of activities not found in other locations. If you’re a traveler looking to have unforgettable experiences in a truly unique destination, read on to learn more about why Kenya may be the place for you.

Embark on a safari adventure

One of the most popular safari locations in Kenya is the Maasai Mara National Reserve, where visitors can witness wildebeest migration and spend time observing the “Big Five” animals – lions, elephants, leopards, buffalo, and rhinoceroses. At the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro, Amboseli National Park also offers mesmerizing views and the chance to see elephants up close.

Explore the coastline

Thanks to its position along the Indian Ocean, Kenya has several pristine beaches with white sand and crystal-clear waters. Take a day cruise to Mombasa Island to check out the Old Town markets and experience a bit of Swahili culture, or head to Diani Beach on the mainland for some water sports.

Immerse yourself in Maasai culture

The best way to gain a deeper understanding of Kenya’s rich cultural heritage is to spend time with the Maasai people. Visit a Maasai village, attend a traditional dance performance, or try a workshop to learn how to make Maasai beadwork. By participating in community-based tourism initiatives, you’ll be able to have an authentic experience and support local communities in the process.

The island of Mauritius, off of the southeast coast of Africa in the Indian Ocean, has been gaining more and more recognition lately as a great travel spot for lovers of both beaches and tropical mountain paradises. If you are lucky enough to visit Mauritius, be sure to add these three natural wonders to your list of places to see.

Black River Gorges National Park

Arguably the most stunning natural area you’ll find on the island is Black River Gorges National Park, found in its southwest portion. Here, you’ll be amazed at the verdant, lush green mountains which host waterfalls and animals such as the island’s macaques.

Ganga Talao

Southern Mauritius hosts Ganga Talao, a crater lake which is located in the secluded mountainous countryside of the island. It has been used as a pilgrimage site for Hindus for hundreds of years and offers unparalleled peace and tranquility.

Le Morne Brabant

This UNESCO World Heritage site is an unforgettable spot where a nearly 2,000-foot high rock monolith towers above the Indian Ocean on a peninsula, offering pristine beaches as its foot. Climb to the top of this mountain and then spend the rest of the day relaxing at the area’s sandy stretches!

Lemurs are one of my favorite primates. Native to the island of Madagascar and popularized by the movie of the same name, these cute little mammals inhabit the trees and scurry about in the jungle of this Indian Ocean island nation.

If you find yourself wanting to travel to Madagascar to catch a glimpse of these furtive beauties, there’s one place you absolutely must go: Andasibe-Mantadia National Park.

A 155-square-kilometer protected area located on the eastern interior side of the island, this park is known as one of the top places in the world to see lemurs in their natural habitat. This primary growth forest hosts all kinds of species, from terrestrial crabs to tree crabs.

The crown jewel and the main draw of the park, however, are the eleven species of lemurs that can be found inhabiting the park.

The biggest lemur in Madagascar, the indri, is one of the biggest attractions at this park. A critically endangered species, the Andasibe-Mantadia National Park is one of the most important protected areas that help maintain the survival of lemurs.

Be sure to visit this beautiful jungle area and its furry friends if you find yourself traveling in Madagascar!
