If you’re a kind of adventure-seeking traveler who’s always looking for something extra, here’s a tip that will light up your holiday! These volcanoes all have well-established roads, cable cars and trails going up, and predictable levels of activity, but they’re still safe to visit.

Arenal, Costa Rica

Arenal is set with its national park and there are several operators offering guided tours in the area. Anywhere in Costa Rica, you can book a one-day tour taking you to the hot springs, waterfalls and the remains of the 1968 eruption.

Mount Batur, Bali, Indonesia

This mountain has mild to moderate explosive activity and lava flows, but it has entered a quiet period in 2015. The best route up the hill is from the village of Toya Bungkah.

Nisyros, Dodecanese, Greece

This is the least-active volcano since it last erupted in 1888. It may not make headlines for its pyrotechnic, but magma is rising beneath the island, seismic activity has been increasing and the temperature of vent emissions is going up.

Mount Etna, Sicily, Italy

Etna dominates the city of Catania and eastern Sicily. Despite the constant volcanic activity, it is still possible to make it to Etna’s highest-allowable point of 2,920m and back in an afternoon.
