Winter gets quite cold, but late August and September bring some truly spectacular weather that any traveler visiting Maine will be sure to enjoy. Maine has been known locally as “Vacationland” for over 85 years, and rightfully so. The beaches are beautiful, the air smells like salt, and there are tons of fun attractions to explore. Here are a few of our favorites:

Try a Lobster Roll

If there’s one thing Maine is known for, it’s lobster. Whole lobsters are available year-round at restaurants around the state, but come summer, lobster meat served with a little mayo and some spices on a toasted bun should surely not be missed. They’re even available at some ice cream shops.

Visit the Portland Headlight

The Portland headlight is actually in Cape Elizabeth, not Portland, but we’ll give it a pass since it’s such a beautiful spot. It was built in 1791, making it the oldest lighthouse in the state.

Take a Ferry to an Island

You can take an extended stay and book a hotel room or just venture out for one day. Whatever you prefer, we highly recommend taking a ferry out to one of the islands in Casco Bay off of Portland. We love Peaks, where you can rent bikes and ride around the island, relax on the beach, and enjoy an ice cream at Down Front.

October is officially upon us. The weather is changing, the days are getting shorter, and now is the time to get outside as much as possible before winter arrives. Wherever you live, the arrival of autumn brings with it plenty of options for fun activities. So put on your favorite sweater and get ready for hayrides, pumpkin picking, and apple cider donuts galore at your local fall festival. Here are some of our top picks from around the country.

Harvest on the Harbor, Portland Maine

Maine is known as “Vacationland,” and while this may conjure up images of summer, autumn is not to be overlooked as a prime time of year for visiting the northeast. The festival takes place at the beginning of November and focuses on local food and drinks highlighting seasonal ingredients. Tickets can be purchased in advance at harvestontheharbor.com.

National Apple Harvest Festival

It’s all-things-apples at the National Apple Harvest Festival in Biglerville, Pennsylvania. Enjoy apple cider, apple pie, and much more at this spectacular event held for two weekends in October.

Coconut Grove Pumpkin Patch Festival

Head south to Miami for this annual event throughout the month of October featuring tons of activities for every age group. Children can explore the cornstalk maze and decorate pumpkins while adults have the option of enjoying seasonal beers at the Pumpkin Beer Bar. The Fall Photo Vignettes offer the perfect opportunity for capturing memories, whatever your age!
