Here you’ll find cobblestone streets built by the Portuguese back in the 17th century, colonial ruins, and impressive buildings in a variety of architectural styles.
For those looking to have some fun and enjoy water sports, Punta del Este is the place to be. This coastal city is a popular resort with picturesque beaches and great nightlife. There are other things to check out here, including the giant sculpture La Mano and the Museum of Sea.
Salto, the country’s second-most populated city, is becoming an increasingly popular tourist location for foreign visitors and people from other parts of Uruguay. Here you’ll find plenty of opportunities for water sports, quite a lot of green spaces, and thermal pools. The latter is perhaps Salto’s biggest attraction, with several public and private hot spring resorts in operation.

]]>One of the most popular hand-shaped sculptures in the entire world is safely tucked away in the middle of Chile’s Atacama Desert. Designed by the Chilean sculpture Mario Irarrázabal, this gigantic iron and concrete hand sculpture was meant to represent human vulnerability and helplessness.
Mano del Desierto isn’t the only famous hand sculpture crafted by Irarrázabal. Located in Punta del Este, Uruguay’s charming resort town, La Mano aka Los Dedos is just as impressive and it shows fingers emerging from the sand. It’s a warning to swimmers and surfers in this area, known for its strong waves.
Unlike the previous two attractions, Las Pozas doesn’t feature an isolated hand attraction, but a bunch that you can discover during your visit. It’s a sculpture park filled with surrealistic creations by Edward James, buried deep inside the tropical rainforest in the Sierra Gorda mountains.

Punta Del Este is known as St. Tropez of South America for a reason, and it’s especially popular with jet-set and tourists looking for a lavish vacation. It’s home to many luxury hotels, casinos, and fancy restaurants that offer a unique haute cuisine experience.
One of the reasons why so many people visiting Uruguay can’t resist Punta Del Este is its’ convenient location. The capital Montevideo isn’t too far away, and there are many amazing surrounding attractions worth exploring once you’re done with the city, starting with Casapueblo and Gorriti Island.

]]>Uruguayan artist Carlos Páez Vilaró started building Casapueblo all the way back in 1958, as his summer house and workshop. Vilaró described it as a “livable sculpture,” and claimed he built it without plans, simply adding to the building over the decades before finally completing it.
The whitewashed cement and stucco walls of Casapueblo are often compared to similar buildings in Santorini. This wasn’t the only source of inspiration Vilaró used, since he also wanted the building to be reminiscent of the nest of the hornero, a common bird species in Uruguay.
Casapueblo does not only serves its original purpose—it now houses a museum, an art gallery, and a café. A lavish hotel also opened on its premises, making this building even more popular with tourists looking for luxurious accommodation.
Casapueblo is located less than 15 km away from Punta del Este, so you can easily reach it by car or public transportation. It’s open to visitors all-year-round, but keep in mind the museum only works on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays between 12:30pm–8:30pm.

]]>La Mano aka The Hand is located in the charming resort town Punta del Este, often described as “the Monaco of the South”. It’s located at one of the city’s most popular beaches, Playa Brava. It’s pretty easy to reach it no matter where you’re staying, just make sure to head to Parada 1 of Playa Brava as the beach actually starches for miles.
La Mano will take your breath away no matter when you decide to see it, but many tourists do it right before sunset when the sky looks most spectacular. This sculpture shows five fingers emerging from the sand, and it’s there to remind swimmers of the beach’s notorious waves.
This sculpture is known by several different names, and it was built by the Chilean artist Mario Irarrázabal back in 1982. Several artists from around the world built their own sculptures in Punta del Este that summer, but La Mano is the only one that still remains untouched in its original spot.
