When it comes to stargazing and astronomical tourism, there are some destinations that are simply out of this world. From remote deserts to dark skies reserves, here are some of the top destinations for stargazing and astrotourism.

The Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve, New Zealand

This reserve is located in a remote part of New Zealand, which means that it has some of the darkest skies in the world. The reserve is home to several world-class observatories and offers visitors the chance to experience the night sky like never before.

Atacama Desert, Chile

The Atacama Desert is considered one of the driest places on Earth. The lack of humidity and light pollution makes it a prime location for stargazing. Visitors can take guided tours, which include stargazing sessions and visits to some of the world’s most advanced telescopes. The Atacama Desert is also home to several otherworldly landscapes, making it a great destination for both nature and astronomy enthusiasts.

Jasper National Park, Canada

This park has been designated as a Dark Sky Preserve, which means that there are strict lighting regulations to protect the night sky. With its remote location and clear skies, Jasper National Park is an ideal location for stargazing. Visitors can take guided tours or simply head out on their own to observe the stars.

Mauna Kea, Hawaii

Mauna Kea boasts some of the clearest and darkest skies in the world. The mountain’s peak sits at an altitude of over 13,000 feet, above most of the Earth’s atmosphere, which makes it an ideal location for observing the stars. With its collection of world-class observatories and knowledgeable guides, Mauna Kea offers an unforgettable stargazing experience.

The Isle of Sark, Channel Islands

The Isle of Sark has been designated as the world’s first Dark Sky Island. With no streetlights and strict light pollution regulations, the island offers some of the darkest skies in Europe. Visitors can take guided night tours, which provide an opportunity to view the Milky Way and other celestial wonders.

Named so after the slow-growing tree, this national park is a desert destination worth dedicating at least a day to visit. A few things to know about the park can help make your visit the best it can be.

Skull Rock

You can see the Joshua trees and get to know the desert a little just by driving around the park. Just across the main road in the park, going from east to west. A large granite rock was eroded in a surprisingly specific way, with eye and nose sockets opened in it along time. Centuries later, it now eerily looks like a giant skull, certainly worth seeing.

Night Sky Festival

An annual event that happens every September in the park, this is one for the stargazers. The festival includes a tour of the model of the solar system at the observatory, guided hikes around the park trails, and a Star Night Party enjoying the clear sky at this light-pollution-free spot. This is an all-ages event!

Accessibility

Joshua Tree National Park has a rather developed accessibility plan. The park includes some wheelchair accessible trails and campgrounds, the tours are available in sign language and with tactile interpretation, and they are now preparing descriptive audio for all their information.
