When it comes to travel, some locations are great for urban exploration, while others serve as ideal settings to relax. Those that can offer both are few and far between, but for times when we want to keep our options open, coastal cities make for an excellent solution. With all of the excitement and convenience of the city and the type of tranquil charm only the beach can provide, these cities have something for everyone, whether you’re planning a solo trip or struggling to agree on a destination with your travel companions. Here are a few especially worth the trip.

Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona is one of the largest cities along the Mediterranean Sea and a prime example of urban life integrated seamlessly with a relaxed beach culture. With a rich cultural heritage and over 300 days of sunshine each year, the Catalonian capital is ideal for tourists looking to unwind, sightsee, and have fun in one place. Spend a few hours on Barceloneta Beach, check out the famous works of Antoni Gaudí, then end your day with some tapas and a pitcher of sangria around 10 p.m.—just as the locals do.

Miami, Florida

Miami is well-known for its vibrant nightlife, but the city is also a hub of world-class food, distinctive architecture and postcard-worthy beaches. South Beach, recognizable by its iconic pastel buildings and crystal blue waters, is the perfect place to spend the day soaking up some sun before heading out to party at clubs like LIV, E11EVEN, and Story.

Tel Aviv, Israel

Another Mediterranean gem, Tel Aviv is home to a unique combination of beautiful beaches, contemporary art, and buzzing nightlife that sets it apart from other metropolitan areas in the region. The city has a diverse, yet laid-back culture that’s easy to enjoy against a backdrop of palm trees and Bauhaus architecture. Take a stroll along the Tayelet by Gordon Beach, sign up for a surf lesson if you’re feeling adventurous, then head to HaKosem to fill up on falafel.

Tel Aviv has some of the greatest food in the world. If you’re planning a trip to Israel, you need to make sure you are getting the full culinary experience. Tel Aviv has many strengths, and from street food to chef restaurants, food is definitely one of them. We highly recommend signing up for a food tour during your stay for many reasons!

Taste a Variety of Foods

When you go on a food tour, the chances are you will try a variety of different foods. Most of these will probably be from places you might not have thought to try on your own, too! A food tour is a great way to get a taste of the exciting flavors and meals of Tel Aviv.

Learn About the Culture

So much about a culture can be learned through food. When you sign up for a food tour, you often get to meet the people who are preparing the food (or who own the establishment!). Hearing their stories will help bring meaning to the experience.

Meet New People

One of the greatest reasons to do any tour is to meet people! By signing up for a food tour, you will be able to meet people from around the world. The best part is you will go home with friends and a full stomach!

If you’re from the United States, you’re probably used to ordering an iced coffee and getting standard brewed coffee poured over ice. Maybe you even add some milk, sugar, or other flavors and sweeteners. If you’re planning to visit Israel, however, here’s why you should be careful when you go to order an iced coffee.

Go to any cafe in Israel, and if you order an iced coffee they will hand you what looks like a brown slushy. No, they didn’t get your order wrong. This is really their version of iced coffee, or “ice cafe” as they call it. Before protesting because it looks like a drink for a child, try taking a sip. It’s delicious.

This drink is super popular because it’s refreshing, stays cold, and it’s sweetened to perfection! Almost every shop has their own slushy machine filled with “ice cafe”, and it’s made the same. It tastes just like a blended iced coffee with cream and sugar!

If this doesn’t sound like your thing and you really just want a “normal iced coffee”, you’ll have to order a “cafe kar”. This literally translates to cold coffee, so they will give you coffee over ice cubes. Just beware that it will still taste different from the U.S. because they use espresso, not standard drip coffee. So it might taste stronger and more bitter than you’re used to.
