Movies are incredible in the way they inspire us. From the stories they tell, to the cinematography that moves us, to the orchestral scores that evoke such emotions within us—movies have the power to influence us in so many ways. This is definitely true when it comes to movies that involve traveling, so without further ado, here are three movies that’ll inspire you to travel the world.

Into The Wild

Based on the Jon Krakauer novel which was based on a true story, Into the Wild tells the story of Christopher McCandless (Emile Hirsch), who upon graduating high school learns about the importance of connecting to nature and withdrawing from the corporate drones of modern society.

The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty

This movie is based on a book of the same name, and it centers around the titular Walter Mitty (Ben Stiller), a mild-mannered office worker going through a mid-life crisis. We watch him as he goes through a major breakthrough, deciding to turn his life upside down and see the world in the process.

Ben Stiller in The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013)

The Lord of the Rings

Although the Lord of the Rings is a fantasy film (based on the epic J.R.R. Tolkien novel), the amount of hiking in this film is through the rooftop. If the picturesque rolling mountain views of Middle Earth don’t inspire you to leave your house, the various quirky characters will.

Italy has long been a favored travel destination for tourists looking to experience art, history, food, and beaches. Over the years, there have been a few movies shot on location that have made travelers want to experience all the wonders of this country. If you want to get inspired to visit Italy, check these out.

Under the Tuscan Sun (2003)

Based on a true story, the film Under the Tuscan Sun is about author Frances Mayes’ decision to uproot herself from New York City after a bad divorce. It gave audiences an inside look at Tuscany, the many olive trees, and all of the old villas just waiting to be renovated. If you’ve been thinking about renting an old villa and summering in Italy then you should watch this film.

I Am Love (2009)

Instead of being set in the countryside, I Am Love takes place in the city of Milan. The film follows the fictional Recchi family and their opulent homes all over Italy. This will make you want to wander around the fashion capital, and summer on an estate.

Call Me By Your Name (2017)

No Italian movie list would be complete without the romantic drama Call Me By Your Name. The film is set in the Lombardy region, and it gives audiences a view of small Italian towns, an old villa, and of course, the romance that permeates Italy itself.

You’re probably going to want to venture here with a significant other after watching these films.

Although many of these films are about the joys of traveling, we have selected them for the gorgeous cityscapes and impressive natural scenery. Even if you can’t jump on a plane just now, you’ll feel the thrill of escape with these wonderful travel flicks.

Eat, Pray, Love

Julia Roberts heads to Rome, India, and Bali to reawaken her soul. Eat, Pray, Love is the perfect way to discover the beauties of traveling from the comfort of Netflix.

Lost In Translation

Not much happens in terms of plot in Lost In Translation. Instead, the film is an artistic presentation of Tokyo and gorgeously captures the atmosphere of Japan.

Into The Wild

Have you ever dreamed of running away and escaping the things of man? Into The Wild explores the dream of entering the wilderness so you don’t have to.

The Beach

The Beach shapes up to be more of a travel warning than a travel tale, but the shots of the paradise beach in Phi Phi, Thailand will take you to another world.

Hector and the Search for Happiness

The beauty of this film is that you can take note of the lessons Hector learns from his travels without having to venture outside of your own front door.

Little Miss Sunshine

Little Miss Sunshine is a timeless classic about a family who takes an unusual road trip and learns how to seize the day and embrace their authentic selves along the way.

Lion

Cinematically, Lion is terrific. The story itself is wonderful but the shots of the Indian scapes are magnificent.

In Bruges

Bruges is a quaint little city in Belgium that looks as if it is the setting of a fairytale. The film is charming for many reasons, but the authentic cityscapes add a lot to its timeless appeal.
