For US passport holders, it’s been a long-accepted fact that most of Europe does not require you to apply for a visa before you travel. This has made planning a vacation a lot easier for American travelers. With the European Union set to roll out the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) program, traveling to some parts of Europe will require more planning on your part than before. Here’s what you need to know about the EU’s new visa waiver scheme so that your journey remains as smooth as possible.

Expected to roll out during the early stages of 2025, the ETIAS scheme applies to countries that fall into four categories. The first category is full members of the Schengen region, including the likes of Italy and Spain. There are then European Free Trade Association (EFTA) countries such as Iceland which are not Schengen members. Future Schengen members such as Cyprus are also included, and finally, European microstates, which include the likes of Monaco and Andorra.

Although there may be many countries that fall under this new program, have no fear, as completing the requirements laid out by the ETIAS scheme is easier than you may think. Rather than being an actual visa, this is a simple waiver that entails a quick online application that you’ll need to fill out before you travel. What’s more, the application will be delivered to you via email, making it quick and easy to complete and submit. Ultimately, ETIAS is a simple travel procedure that helps European nations safeguard their security without hindering your travel plans as a US citizen.

The Christmas season is a magical time of year and even more so in the historic centers of old European cities. Here are some of the most beautiful Christmas markets in Europe to add to your travel bucket list.

Tallinn Christmas Market (Estonia)

Tallinn’s Christmas Market is located in the center of the city’s old town and will transport you into the Middle Ages. At the center of the historic square, you’ll see a huge Christmas tree strung with lights and traditional decorations. In fact, Tallinn’s tree is believed to be the first public Christmas tree in Europe.

Prague Christmas Market (Czech Republic)

Every year Prague’s Old Town Square is decorated with a massive Christmas tree and a beautiful nativity scene. There are plenty of local holiday treats to try and booths to explore. Make sure to also walk around the city and visit the smaller markets in different neighborhoods. Yes, there is more than one in Prague!

Christkindelsmärik (Strasbourg, France)

Strasbourg, often referred to as the “Capital of Christmas,” has one of Europe’s oldest and most enchanting Christmas markets. The city’s historic center transforms into a winter wonderland with its illuminations, decorated facades, and wooden chalets. The beautiful Strasbourg Cathedral in the background is the perfect finishing touch.
