If you’re planning on spending some time in the south of France this summer, make sure you check out the stunning city of Arles in the region of Provence. Arles dates back to the early Roman period, but that doesn’t mean this city is stuck in the past. There are plenty of exciting cultural sites across the city, and while many of them are linked with the famous artist Van Gogh who included Arles in many of his paintings, the city is more than just a walking tour of Van Gogh’s paintings. Check out some of the best things to do in Arles here.

Explore the City Streets

Like many older French cities, Arles has a stunning patchwork of small, winding streets interspersed with wider and grander avenues. It’s worth spending a morning simply wandering around, taking in the beautiful architecture and the atmosphere of the city.

Follow Van Gogh

Across the city, you may find yourself stopping and suddenly recognizing a street scene or a particular building. Vincent Van Gogh was particularly inspired by the bright, warm light in the south of France, as well as its buildings and landscapes. You can book a walking tour which will allow you to explore the city as it was experienced by the great painter himself.

Enjoy the Food

As a region, Provence boasts some pretty incredible dishes. When staying in Arles, see if you can sample at least one of them – how about some fresh ratatouille made with locally grown produce, a bouillabaisse soup made with fish caught fresh from the sea, some homemade aioli and fries, or one of the delicious fruit tarts which you will find in most bakeries in Arles?

With their lights and sculpture and water, fountains can be some of the coolest landmarks in any given city. And Europe has some pretty impressive ones. If you happen to be a fountain fan, here are some you’ll definitely want to visit. Just don’t forget some coins for wishing!

The Trevi Fountain

Perhaps one of the most famous fountains in the world, the Trevi fountain is so beautiful you almost have to see it to believe it. We highly recommend reading up on the fountain’s symbolism before you visit, so you can truly appreciate the meaning of the design. Even cooler? They say tossing a coin in the fountain means you’ll come back to Rome!

The Magic Fountain of Montjuïc

There’s a reason they call this fountain magic. Located in Barcelona, the Magic Fountain of Montjuïc is known for its beautiful, colorful, musical light show. If you’re ever in Barcelona, you won’t want to miss it. It lasts 20 minutes, and it’s totally free to watch.

Jet d’Eau

Located in Geneva, Switzerland, the Jet d’Eau is quite the jet. It’s one of the tallest fountains in the world and has become an internationally-recognized symbol of Geneva for its iconic, instantly recognizable look.
