Of all the world’s countries, China has a certain reverence that’s unparalleled by most. With a population consisting of over 1.4 billion people, and a history that ages back thousands of years, the country is intimidating, to say the least. But with all that fascination comes an eager generation of backpackers to visit its marvelous cities. If that’s you, but you’re also on a budget, here are three of the cheapest tourist cities to visit in China.

Harbin

During the winter months, Harbin is one of the most magical places on earth. The snowy landscapes of Northern China give Scandinavian views a run for their money—and ironically, they’re cheaper to see than you think. Hotels there run for around 200 Yuan a night, which is a great deal for the quality of trip you’re getting in return.

Chengdu

The food in Chengdu is as authentic as it gets, and it’s incredibly cheap. Stroll down Jinli Ancient Street, Chunxi Road, or Kuan Zhai Alley free of charge, and soak in the amazing culture that surrounds you. If you’re up for it, pay next to nothing for a Chinese massage.

Shenyang

Shenyang is also extremely cheap, and perhaps that’s why it’s considered among the happiest cities in China. Check out its replica of Beijing’s Forbidden City, and you won’t be disappointed!
