Southwest of Portugal in the Atlantic Ocean lies Madeira, a small magical island known among football fans as the birthplace of the Portuguese football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, although this picturesque island has a lot more to be known for!

It is one of the loveliest archipelagos that you can visit in that part of the world, offering visitors breathtaking natural landscapes that leave them speechless.

Renowned for its wine and perfect climate, the main island of Madeira is made of volcanic rock formations, high cliffs, pretty beaches and small settlements along the Faja River.

The capital of the island is the city of Funchal, which is one of the biggest tourist attractions that Portugal can offer. The small city center can be completely explored on foot and it offers great views along the way.

Some of the best known landmarks of the city that you definitely shouldn’t miss are the Se Cathedral that was built in the 15th century and the famously lively city market.

The island also offers great hiking locations with magnificent views of the ocean.

Funchal is full of lovely restaurants that serve the most delicious traditional Portuguese dishes and a great selection of local wines.
