If you’re plotting a trip to America’s heartland, Missouri is one of the states you’re probably planning to visit. St. Louis is one of its vibrant cities, with many must-see attractions—but the Gateway Arch stands apart amongst all else.

This iconic monument is the world’s tallest arch, and one of the most important symbols of St. Louis, and Missouri as a whole. It was opened to the public in 1967 as a monument to the westward expansion of the United States.

The Gateway Arch now attracts millions of tourists every year, who are constantly in awe of its monumental size. It’s located on the west bank of the Mississippi River, and it’s a focal point of the Gateway Arch National Park—which also features a museum and an old courthouse.

In addition to checking out the arch and learning more about its history, you can take part in several more activities during your visit. Tram rides to the top are the biggest hit with tourists, because they’ll transport you 630 feet to the top and offer amazing views of St. Louis.
