Wisconsin isn’t often thought of as a destination state in America, but it is in fact one of the most beautiful in the country. With plenty of forests, greenery, and lakes to speak of, as well as a climate that doesn’t get overwhelmingly hot even in the summer months, Wisconsin is a wonderful place to visit if you’re a nature lover. There are many great places to hike, camp, and swim. Here are some of the best trails in the state.

Gibraltar Rock

Wisconsin boasts the “Ice Age Trail”, a trail entirely contained within Wisconsin, which traces the path of a glacier that swept across what would become the state over 12,000 years ago. One trail along this path is the Gibraltar Rock trail, which winds up some cliffs through different types of local trees and with views of local farmland. This trail is great for the most adventurous, as there are no guardrails and it can be somewhat dangerous at times.

Copper Falls State Park

If you like your scenery to be named after bible-reminiscent imagery, then try hiking around Copper Falls State Park. There you’ll be able to follow the Bad River over to the Devil’s Gate, a rocky chasm leading to a bridge and a view of a waterfall. There are in fact two waterfalls along this trail that you can see, and it’s also a great place to camp out.

Madeline Island

Madeline Island is one of the only Islands in Lake Superior to be developed, but it is also the site of Big Bay State Park which houses tons of hiking trails as well as opportunities for biking, boating, and swimming. Here you can view nesting bald eagles, underwater caves, and camp out under the stars without leaving society too far behind.
