Calling all sake lovers! It’s time to do some traveling.

Made by fermenting rice, sake is Japan’s most famous alcoholic beverage. The rice wine is typically served in a small porcelain cup called a sakazuki and is a usual accompaniment to sushi and ramen.

In the same way that wine enthusiasts venture to France and Italy, those who love sake can now embark on a special train ride in Japan to fully immerse themselves in the drink’s culture.

The three-hour sightseeing train comes courtesy of the East Japan Railway Company and is called the Shu*Kura train. Passengers will travel through the Niigata Prefecture, along is coastline and mountains.

The experience will enable guests to experience sake in all its forms—from brewing to tasting. Snacks to pair with the sake and live music are also included.

The Shu*Kura train takes off from Joetsu Myoko and makes its way to Tōkamachi, Echigo Yuzawa, and Niigata city. Whilst onboard, guests have a choice of three rail cars.

In the first, families are able to sit together in box seats and enjoy the view as they sip on drinks. The second car features standing tables and live musical performances, while the final car allows passengers to relax on reclining seats and sofas.
