If you’ve done a lot of traveling, you know that some airports are nicer than others. In fact, some airports are so beautiful that you almost welcome a long layover so that you can hang out there more. There are tons of amazing airports out there, but here are a few that particularly caught our eye.

Kansai International Airport — Japan

Japan is known for being somewhat ahead of the curve when it comes to technology. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that this airport is as breathtaking as it is. Located on an island called Osaka Bay, Kansai International Airport was built with particularly strong materials so that it would be protected in case of a natural disaster. However, the coolest thing about it is the way it’s uniquely placed in the water.

Madrid-Barajas International Airport — Spain

Something special happens when you walk through Madrid-Barajas International Airport. There’s a certain serenity that you don’t feel in most airports, almost as if the architects planned it that way when they originally envisioned it. Using steel and bamboo, this eco-friendly airport makes you feel like you’re already backpacking before you’ve even left the airport.

Beijing Capital International Airport — China

Beijing Capital International Airport really took a step up when the 2008 Beijing Olympics came around. Eager to impress, the airport’s infrastructure was completely revamped in a way that focused on natural light. The ceiling was made with mesh skylights, which brings an especially colorful ambiance to anyone who walks through the halls. Can we live here, please?
